In June of 2005 I traveled to Kentucky for a few days to see the sights of Bourbon country. I had signed up for Woodford Reserve's Bourbon Academy which took up most of one day. Two additional days were spent seeing as many sights as practical.
The first day found me touring distilleries in the Frankfort area; Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, and Four Roses. On the second day I enjoyed the sights in Bardstown, including Makers Mark, Heaven Hill, and the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History. I also managed to have a drink at The Old Talbott Tavern before heading up to Louisville for a heavenly dinner at Bourbons Bistro. Day three began with a hunt for the remains of the Old Taylor Distillery before a memorable day at the bourbon academy.
It was remarkable how each distillery had its own flavor. Makers Mark threw the Disneyland of distillery tours while Wild Turkey was the most industrial. Four Roses featured the distilling process up to barreling while Heaven Hill showed off only the rickhouses. Each was unique, and they were all worth taking the time to visit.
