Mike's Bar

The following is a collection of my favorite drinks. This is not meant to be a comprehensive bar guide. These are merely the house favorites ...

Here's the menu:
(Drinks are color coded to show what they should look like)

Real Margarita

The traditional Margarita, made with the finest ingredients. Once you've had one, you'll never settle for anything less.
The recipe is from Maria's Real Margarita Book (see below).

Fill cocktail shaker 1/2 full with medium size ice cubes
Add 1 1/2 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 lime)
Add 1 1/4 oz. El Tesoro Silver tequila
Add 3/4 oz. Cointreau
Place top on shaker and shake for 5 seconds
Salt rim of glass if desired
Pour drink into glass

Frozen Margarita

This guest-pleaser was inspired by a similar creation at Chili's Restaurant.
Credit for "Discovery of Concept" goes to Arthur Lyman.

Fill blender 3/4 full with crushed ice
Blend with enough Tequila to make a thick & smooth slush
Blend in 1 can Bacardi Margarita frozen mix
Pour into glass
Top drink with 1 shot Chambord or any similar berry liquor

Snake Bite

This drink is very refreshing during the summer and is very easy to make when you just don't have the ambition to crank up the ice crusher and blender again.

Fill a medium glass with ice cubes
Add 1/2 to 1 part Roses Lime Juice
Add 1 part Jack Daniels Whiskey
Stir

Roman Candle

I got this recipe off a Sambucca bottle many years ago, but almost no one has ever heard of it.

Excellent shock factor at bars. The local bartender cringes every time I order.

Fill a large glass with ice cubes
Add 2 parts Orange Juice
Add 1 part Sambucca
Add 1 part Amaretto
Shake well

Oatmeal Cookie

Tastes just like the name ...

Fill a small glass with ice cubes
Add 2 parts Baileys Irish Creme
Add 2 parts Butterscotch Schnapps
Add 1 part Cinnamon Schnapps
Stir well

Chocolate Martini

Fill cocktail shaker 1/2 full with ice cubes
Add 1 part Grey Goose Vodka
Add 1 part white Creme de Cacao
Place top on shaker and shake for 5 seconds
Strain drink into chilled martini glass

Berry Martini

Fill cocktail shaker 1/2 full with ice cubes
Add 1 part Absolut Citron Vodka
Add 1/2 part Cointreau
Add 1/2 part Chambord
Add 1 part Cranberry Juice
Place top on shaker and shake for 5 seconds
Strain drink into chilled martini glass

Purple Frozen Drink

This is a very tasty frozen juice drink with a nice rum flavor. It is very important to use Dole brand frozen juice mixes which are 100% juice. Most other frozen juice mixes are mostly sugar and turn out too sweet.

Fill blender 3/4 full with crushed ice
Blend with enough Captain Morgan Spiced Rum to make a thick & smooth slush
Blend in 1 can Dole Tropical Fruit frozen mix
Pour into glass
Top drink with 1 shot Meyers Dark Rum

ChocoBerry Pudding

Chill a bottle of Chambord in the freezer
Chill a small glass in the freezer
Chill a bottle of Baileys Irish Creme in the refrigerator

Take the glass from the freezer
Add 1 part Baileys Irish Creme
Add 1 part Chambord
Stir well for 10 - 20 seconds
The mixture will turn to pudding and can be eaten with a spoon!

Peach Drink

Fill a small glass with ice cubes
Add 1 part Peach Schnapps
Add 1 part Stoli Peach Vodka
Add 1 part Champagne
Add 2 parts Orange Juice
Stir well

Stuttering Lizard

Fill a small glass with ice cubes
Add 1 part Sauza Hornitos Tequila
Add 1 part Peach Schnapps
Add 1/2 part Cointreau
Add 2 parts Orange Juice
Add 2 parts Cranberry Juice
Stir well

Mudslide

A real Mudslide, not the milkshake-like immitation you get at the local restaurant.

Fill a small glass with ice cubes
Add 1 part Baileys Irish Creme
Add 1 part Kahlua
Add 1 part Absolut Vodka
Add 1 to 2 parts Milk if it's before noon
Stir well

Pineapple Drink

This is a long time favorite. So smooth even your mother will want seconds.

Fill a large glass with ice cubes
Fill the glass 1/2 to 2/3 with 2 parts Pineapple Juice and 1 part Orange Juice
Add 1 part Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
Add 1 part Bacardi Dark or Black Rum
Add a splash of Blue Curacao
Shake well

Candy Apple Martini

Fill cocktail shaker 1/2 full with ice cubes
Add 1 part Absolut Vodka
Add 1 part Sour Apple Schnapps
Add 1/2 part Butterscotch Schnapps
Add 1 part Cranberry Juice
Place top on shaker and shake for 5 seconds
Strain drink into chilled martini glass

Candy Apple Raspberry Martini

Similar to the drink above, but much better. The taste and color are amazing.

Fill cocktail shaker 1/2 full with ice cubes
Add 1 part Absolut Raspberri Vodka
Add 1 part Sour Apple Schnapps
Add 1/2 part Butterscotch Schnapps
Add 1 part Cranberry Juice
Place top on shaker and shake for 5 seconds
Strain drink into chilled martini glass

Boston Harbor

A very tasty variation of the basic Pineapple Drink. Make one and you'll understand the name.
Credit for this one goes to college roommate and drinking bud, Arthur Lyman.

Fill a large glass with ice cubes
Fill the glass 1/2 way with 2 parts Pineapple Juice and 1 part Orange Juice
Add 1 part Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
Add 1 part Bacardi Dark or Black Rum
Add a splash of Blue Curacao
Add a splash of Sloe Gin
Shake well

Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster

The title comes from the famous drink in Douglas Adams's Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If you haven't read the books, I will try to explain. One passage reads something like: The guide tells which planets make the best Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters and what rehabilitation facilities exist to help you recover afterwards.

I finally found a drink that lives up to this expectation.

Mix a "Kamakaze".
A real one. A few drops of lime juice in a glass of vodka.

Mix a "Slow Comfortable Screw Up Against the Wall"
You can find the recipe elsewhere. It is basically Sloe Gin, Southern Comfort, Vodka, Galiano, and Orange Juice.
Both of these drinks are nasty tasting and deadly on their own. Here's the trick: Take a sip of both a swirl it around in your mouth. It will taste just like Hawiian Punch! Really, I'm not kidding!

Don't ask me how on earth I discovered this, because it should be obvious that I wouldn't remember.

This is a fun drink at bars. Most waitresses will get very upset if you try to order both of these drinks at once.

Here is our cat after one too many ...
(OK, just kidding)

I own the following books and personally recommend them as excellent:

cover
The Bartender's Black Book
The best bartending guide I have ever seen. Unlike most guides,
nearly every drink is one you have heard of or looks worth trying.

cover The Book of Tequila : A Complete Guide
Most people have no idea what good Tequila tastes like.
This book will educate you and open your eyes.
cover Maria's Real Margarita Book
This book taught me how to make a proper Margarita.
Myself, my family and my friends are forever grateful.
